On the Women Empowerment Global Cause Day at Horyou Village, six female standouts in the film industry met with Horyou team member Vincent Magnenat to talk about their experiences and ideas, as well as the role gender plays in their work. Carla Ortiz, the Bolivian producer of “Olvidados” (“Forgotten”), Rula Nasser, a Jordanian film producer, founder of The Imaginarium Films; Aya Al Blouchi, Lebanese film producer, founder of Seat 26, which assists nascent filmmakers; Joanne Reay, head of Terra Mater film studio; Aurelia Ovan from The Womanity Foundation and Audrey Clinet is president of Eroïne, which promotes female filmmakers. Topics covered include normalizing women in filmmaking, the acceptance of women in positions of control rather than merely creative roles, and challenging the notion that women are accepted as leaders in government and commerce but not in film. In addition, the filmmakers discuss stopping the perpetuation of embedded stereotypes and how social media is leveling the playing field, how sometimes women are as much at fault for promoting these stereotypes, and the value of small actions rather than huge campaigns.
