Humanitarian Alex Cottin, director of external relations for Action Against Hunger, sits down with Horyou team member Dearbhla Gavin at Horyou Village at the Cannes Film Festival to discuss the international organization’s mission to end world hunger. For over 35 years, Action Against Hunger has battled famine, especially in areas affected by conflicts and natural disasters. Cottin credits his “nomadic” upbringing with wanting to connect with and help people at an international level. He discusses the importance of working with credible, experienced organizations to make sure help arrives where it’s needed. He stresses the importance of a multidimensional approach to fighting hunger, including water sanitation, security and emergency response in addition to the basic provision of food. Cottin talks about the earthquake crisis in Nepal, where the organization has been active for over a decade and was able to quickly step up its efforts there. He also expresses his excitement over the fact that companies are getting involved at the programmatic level of humanitarianism rather than merely writing checks.
